Description:

Sluice Box is along the Horse Canyon Trail in the rarely visited northwest corner of the San Rafael Wilderness.  There are a few old camps and newer hunter camps up this canyon and some confusion as to what is the real Sluice Box Camp.  This is along the Condor Trail.  This canyon is most commonly visited by hunters who access this remote canyon on horseback.

Located 3 1/2 miles up Horse Gulch on Horse Canyon Trail (31W09) under some Coast Live Oak trees is Iocated SIuice Box Camp. It is mostly used as a hunters camp. At one time there was I table, 2 stoves and an open pit toilet which is called a throne. The story of Art Forrester is that rock ledges in the creek formed ripples like those in the bottom of a miners sluice box and that the Forrester family placered mined for gold at this location.

Camp Description:First trip to Sluice Box. GPS showed I made it to camp but could not find any signs of a formal campsite on ether side of the stream. Ether the GPS location on forest service maps is inaccurate, or the campsite was washed away in recent storms.

Still a beautiful valley to hike in, but about 90% of Horse Trail between the Schoolhouse and Sluice Box has disappeared.
