Description:

Located on Lockwood Creek North Fork Trail 22W02 which starts at the Three Falls Boy Scout Camp in Lockwood Valley. This is a very steep trail. It is better to hike in from Mount Abel via the Mount Pinos Trail 21W03 and North Fork Trails north end.
This camp was used by sheep herders from the San Joaquin Valley in the late 1880's and 90's. At one time there were 2 grated stoves and rock rings. Water is available from 2 springs. The one in camp is often contaminated but the spring 1 1/4 mile up the trail is good.

Sheep Camp is one of the highest camps in the Los Padres at just over 8,400ft.  The camp is along the North Fork Lockwood Trail and is most commonly accessed via the Campo Alto or Chula Vista trailheads.

Sheep Camp Survey - 08-23-2023 - by D. Brown
Link: Sheep Camp
Date: 08-23-2023
Surveyor Name:D. Brown
Camp Description:
I saw a Black Bear at 3:30 pm on 8/23. I had just arrived at the lower campsite and dropped my pack. The bear was walking toward the spring about 300 ft. above me. He ran off when I clumsily tripped over a log trying to get my camera.

Other than that the trails were in pretty good shape after the rain from TS Hilary. You could see where water had flowed and puddled. a few spots had small trenches down the middle or side of the trail from water flow. The forest floor was still damp as well.

In addition to the bear I saw bats at night and one deer about 1/2 mile from the trailhead on my way out.

Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:Water is flowing well, Took 20-30 seconds to fill 32 oz
Weather Conditions:45-70 degrees, mostly sunny. Windy after dark.

Camp Description:The upper spring and pipe was completely dry.  The spring box closer to the campsites had a bit of water in it, not high enough to reach the internal pipe, but enough to drown a field mouse.  I removed the dead rodent.  A few feet below, the water was trickling steadily, enough to make a puddle, surrounded by green algae and possibly home to some tadpoles.
The camps were tidy and wood was stacked at each fire ring.

Camp Description:Spring has two outlet pipes that discharge from the spring box.  Looking uphill, the outlet pipe on the left was barely flowing with a slow drip.  The pipe on the right had a very slow steady flow of approximately 1/10 L /minute.  We had vessels placed under both outlet pipes which easily sustained our group of 8, but required several vessels to containerize and transfer water for filtering. We used a large cooking pot and a collapsible bucket.
