Description:

Big Pine is located at the eastern pinnacle of the San Rafael Mountains and is the tallest point in Santa Barbara County.  It is also the highest point in the Dick Smith Wilderness.  While the summit is more flat and rounded than most peaks, there are still great views in all directions.  It's a great accomplishment to summit Big Pine, congratulations if you've been here.

Big Pine Mountain Survey - 05-20-2022 - by Addison Jerlow

Date: 05-20-2022
Surveyor Name:Addison Jerlow
Camp Description:Follow the use trail and chute for a much easier hike up than the old trail. I did find the cairns marking the old trail up the ridge but that route involves rock-hopping and a few whitehorn plunges. Took the new route down. Looked around every rock outcrop at the peak and could not find a register.

Camp Description:Trail up from the road was bit hard to follow, mainly due to snow and a lot of blowdowns over what looked like the trail. Had it not been for snow, it might have been easier.

Camp Description:Got me to the county high point finally! Huge top with lots of space to camp, if that's your thing. Would have been mighty nice up here this night. Takes a bit of walking about to see all the sights since they sort of hide behind the edges. Difficult to decide where the high point is, but I did find the register. Could see Santa Cruz today.

Camp Description:

Water Source Details:The register at the summit got wet! Paper is wet and pages are stuck together. Amazing the register survived the zaca fire but got destroyed from the rain and snow. Please bring a new dry notebook if you come up here.
