Camp Description:What a wonderful backcountry camp, complete with a grill and backcountry box stove. Spent 2 nights here and enjoyed perfect weather, nice soft and flat campground for our tents, and excellent water. Enough water to soak and bathe in nature with birds providing the soundtrack. A really unique rocky face opposing the camp as a backdrop. Spent a few hours with my crew cleaning out some poison oak from the camp and the pathway down to the creek.

Pens Camp Survey - 06-04-1994 - by M. Jones
Link: Pens Camp
Date: 06-04-1994
Surveyor Name:M. Jones
Camp Description:Prior to the Zaca Fire burning over 240,207 acres in 2007 Indian Creek contained one of the largest trout populations in the LPNF (personal observation). Historical highlight: This camp was so named because of some barbed wire stock pens that were there at one time. They were possibly used by Jose Moraga who operated a mine at the narrows of Indian Creek, but it is more likely that they were used by the Clark and Canet Company which maintained a cattle range on Loma Pelona just to the east of this area. (Source; A Campers Guide to the Tri-County Area. Robert Burtness, 1981).
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:The headwaters of Indian Creek typically contains cold, clean water all year.
Weather Conditions:75* and sunny
