Old Man Mountain Survey - 02-21-2021 - by Mike Maki
Link: Old Man Mountain
Date: 02-21-2021
Surveyor Name:Mike Maki
Camp Description:This is quite a haul but it's mostly dirt road so you can cover the miles at your pace. Started from Matilija Trailhead. About a dozen cars parked there. I didn't pay too much attention to the previous GPX tracks and as a result we bagged the unnamed and unmarked peak southeast first. It was not until I checked my GPS and realized we were not on Old Man. Not to worry though it it actually a very nice and worthy peak. Even has a 22 year old register. It's quite an easy scramble over to Old Man from this peak. Actually a bit of an easier climb. The route down is a little difficult to follow but there are a few cairns marking the way. Avoid the poodle dog bush. Then it was back on the road and over to Monte Arido. Not much to describe for Arido except it has a very broad summit with great views all around. From there it was the long 12 mile haul back. A couple of little uphill sections on the way back but for the most part it's a nice grade back to the trailhead. Aside from the couple we saw in the first mile, we didn't see another person all day long. The last couple of miles were in the dark with a half moon illuminating our walk out. Didn't even need our headlamps. 24.5 miles and 11 hours. Some pics.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:Water in Murietta Canyon and what appears to be a stock pond about a mile up from the divide.
Weather Conditions:Calm and cool
