Camp Description:Road is impassible at the Piru Creek crossing due to a very large washout. Even a lifted Jeep couldn’t make it through. Ended up camping somewhere else for Mother’s Day Weekend this year. Last time I visited in November 2021, the road was passible. Must’ve happened during the storms in December.

Dutchman Campground Survey - 06-15-2019 - by Oh Three

Camp Description:Dutchman, most likely named about a German settler ("Deutsche"), is an excellent, albeit dry, high-elevation car campground.

Back before the Forest Service continuously closed the road up Alamo, this was a fun winter campground, so long as the snow was not too deep on the drive up. Now we're lucky if it opens in May, then it's closed for Fire Season, then it opens briefly in the Fall, then it closes again for winter. Oh well.

If you want to camp at 6+ thousand feet, this is a large campground, and a pleasant easy drive.

Avoid deer hunting season. Zone D13. Every bend in the road is filled with hunters, and Dutchman is full. If it's not deer hunting season, you have a good chance of enjoying solitude, especially during the week.

Do avoid the campsites near the Miller Jeep Trail (an excellent trail to hike from Gold Hill in the winter when the motorized vehicles are banned!) which is on Dutchman's north side. Convoys of 4x4's arrive after their difficult climb at any time of day or night, then celebrate by blasting their radios, opening their beers, and doing "doughnuts" in the dirt, regardless of whether you or other campers just went to bed after quietly star gazing. Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of the motorized crowd. Because Dutchman is located on a large flat on the west side of Alamo, you can pick a distant camp site, and minimize any disruption.
