Description:

Located along Hare Canyon, Vicente Flat Camp is set at the junction of the Kirk Creek Trail and the Stone Ridge Trail.  There are a few campsites amongst a thick grove of redwood trees.  A backpacking trip up to Vicente Flat is the quintessential Big Sur experience with sweeping ocean views, redwood trees, rolling grassy hills and rock outcrops.  Vicente Flat is most commonly accessed from the trailhead along Hwy 1 just across from Kirk Creek Campground but can also be visited by descending from the Cone Peak Road.

Vincente Flat Camp Survey - 03-23-2024 - by Patrick Morgan

Camp Description:Beautiful camp among the redwoods and pines. It rained all night, but the trees helped cover us from the worst of it. Many spacious campsites with log benches and fire rings spread all over the Flat. Other surveys say the creek is usually dry through camp, but it was flowing fast and clear across the ground. A beautiful backcountry camp. The trail past the camp was difficult to find, though we were not planning to go further. Good thing, too, because the trails up canyon (Stone ridge and the trail to Cone Peak Road) looked overgrown. The camp is the perfect distance for a nice overnight trip. Great times with friends!

Camp Description:Overnighter. Very peaceful camp. I removed as much TP as I can stomach, but overall clean camp. The stream west of Espinosa Camp is flowing great; you may want to fill up there, as that is your last water before Vincente Flat Camp. You can hear water flowing lower in the canyon as you approach Vicente Flat Camp.
Water Source:Trickle
Water Source Details:Stream goes underground through camp, but trickles a bit up stream. The water was clear and without moss.
Weather Conditions:Slightly cloudy. Not too wam day or not too cold night. Slight breeze along coastal part of trail.

Camp Description:The campsite is large, beautiful and had a reliable source of water (while it was hidden in the dry river bed and small, it was constant and enough for everyone coming through). There is also a larger stream between Espinosa and Vincent campgrounds (closer to Espinosa)
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:The river bed is totally dry at the campground, HOWEVER there is a small stream and pool of water that was reliable and provided more than enough water for the 20 people at camp.

Camp Description:Reliable water in a babbling creek. Beautiful campground set amongst the redwoods. Plenty of established fire rings. Fills up very fast on weekends; we shared it with about 25 people on Saturday night. It's right on the fog line; definitely colder than the other campgrounds on this route

Vincente Flat Camp Survey - 07-18-2015 - by Jesse Williams

Surveyor Name:Jesse Williams
Camp Description:We got to the campsite from the Kirk Creek trailhead at Highway 1. A few things to note:

The distance form Highway 1 that we recorded was 6+ miles.

BRING A BUG NET! In the summer, there are millions of little mutant black flies that are resistant to bug spray that make it their mission to land on your face/lips/ears. Bring a face net. If you read this and don't bring one, you will regret it.

The creek that runs directly through the camp is dried up but there are two smaller creeks about 1/4 mile up from he camp. These were flowing nicely and had several pools that look like you could have bathed in them.

This is a popular camp and when we went on a non-holiday weekend there were ~5 other groups there at the same time.

Camp Description:Stayed on two days, Friday the 23rd and Sunday the 25th. Camp was completely empty on Friday, and on Sunday had at least 10 groups of backpackers. Some poison oak, but easily avoided and not encroaching on campsites.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:The creek was flowing about a 1/4 mile down from camp. In addition, there are several flowing creeks along the next mile of trail towards Cone Peak Rd.
Weather Conditions:Not too cold - maybe lower 50s at night.
