Description:

Trail Springs Camp is located at the junction of the Gamboa and Cone Peak Trail within the Ventana Wilderness. This is a small, sloped, and shaded camp nestled near the top of a steep canyon on the north side of Cone Peak. There is room for one, maybe two tents. The spring, for which the camp is named, is located just east of camp and is the headwaters of South Fork Devil's Creek.

Trail Springs Camp Survey - 09-23-2023 - by Joel

Camp Description:Camp is in good condition. Lots of leaves on the ground. No poison oak in the immediate area around the camp. This one is moderately challenging to get to, but its worth the effort. There are some rocks and logs to sit on if you don't pack a chair. The fire ring is made of rocks. We did not build a fire due to the restrictions as well as the amount of dry leaves throughout the camp. Trees are close enough to hang a hammock. There are only two somewhat flat spots for small tents. This camp is on a hillside.
Water Source:Trickle
Water Source Details:Decent flow trickle with several small pools big enough to fill water bottles

Camp Description:The camp here is pretty simple. There are two, small, somewhat flat areas to put tents and several good trees for hammocks.

We hiked in from the other side of Cone Peak which meant we did a 1000 ft climb and decent into the camp ground. Then we hiked back up to the top of Cone Peak to watch the sunset, which was well worth it.

The camp ground was heavy with flies during the day, if you're planning to camp there you may want to limit your time in camp while it's warm enough for the flies to be active.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:The creek here is very small and somewhat hidden. We were able to fill up a 4-liter water bag in 5 minutes or so.
Weather Conditions:The area is way above Big Sur. It was probably 50 degrees in Big Sur and 80 up on the peak.
