Santa Cruz Peak Survey - 06-17-2018 - by Valerie Norton
Link: Santa Cruz Peak
Date: 06-17-2018
Surveyor Name:Valerie Norton
Camp Description:Took the day to hike up from Santa Cruz Station to the peak and back. My favorite bit was the on faith bushwhack portion where I just sort of had to feel out the soft spots to get through ceanothus right before a crawl under a tree and suddenly actual clear space under oaks! Still downed trees in that spot. Don't get your hopes up too high about anywhere on the fire trail being easy. Once on the second fuel break, there is a level of trail being left by the peakbaggers although they do not come often at all. I had a GPS track and had not read their bagging instructions, so needed the track for a few hints. There are turns! Their trail leaves the break to cut through scrub oak where I managed to follow a wrong clue and had to crawl a few times and break through one layer of bushes to get back on track. After that, it was pretty clear to the top. Cloudy and brush covered, so no views. It cleared as I started down and there are plenty of views from the trail on the way up, so that was nice.
