Description:

Located in a bare, sloping area by a dry creek. It is located on the east side of OHV Motorcycle Trail 23W08. The camp was used as a hunting camp and it is reported that a early day sheep herder used the camp while herding sheep in this area.

Ortega Camp is a remote and rustic camp site that is accessible via Ortega Trail.  From the South the Ortega Trailhead is 1.5 miles north of Wheelers Campground/Visitor Center on Hwy 33.  This motorcycle trail is 6 miles long (to the camp site) and has sections that are very steep, rough and rocky making it very deserving of it's black diamond (advanced rider only) status.  From the North the camp may be accessed via Cherry Canyon Road (3 miles long) to the North Ortega Trailhead (at the end of Cherry Canyon Road).  This section of Ortega Trail is an old jeep road that is currently only open to motorcycles an should be Ok for intermediate level riders for the 3 miles on down to Ortega Camp.  The camp has 5 metal fire rings and 2 picnic tables but one of two tables is in very bad shape and not of much use.

Ortega Trail is maintained by the "Ojai Valley Dirt Riders" a motorcycle club that was founded and organized for the sole purpose of keeping Ortega Trail open year round for the adventurous riders who enjoy it's many challenges.  We have since branched out to help with OHV trail maintenance in other areas of the Los Padres National Forest.

Intersecting hiking trails: Dry Lakes Ridge Trail and Matilija Canyon Trail.

Camp Description:Camp looks fine, fire ring and picnic table are intact. There are bullet casings and broken glass strewn around, so watch your step. Hard to see where a good tent site would be - rocky ground, fully exposed, no water. I gather this is mostly used as a rally point for OHV.
