Junipero Serra Survey - 08-15-2018 - by Sacramento_Mick

Camp Description:My wife and three young adult and I hiked up to the summit of Junipero Serra from Memorial Camp ground.  We started at 4:30 am and were two miles in before it began to get light.  There was slight water flow in Santa Lucia Creek but we didn't test or examine it.  Early morning temp was 60 and rose to 80 at summit at around 10:30 am.  The about 1-1.5k of the Santa Lucia Peak Trail between the western peak and main peak was overgrown with the heavy brush/foliage of abundant Ponderosa Pine Saplings which were 10-20 ft tall.  My sense at the time was that the trail would be lost if not cleared in the next 12 months.  All of the Santa Lucia Creek Trail and first 1.75 miles of Santa Lucia Peak Trail were in good or decent shape.  My wife avoided the bushwacking by hanging out to read a good book at the junction of the Santa Lucia Creek and Santa Lucia Peak trails.

The lookout at the summit of Junipero Serra was worn from the elements but still in passable shape and one of my sons climbed to the top and checked out the observation deck.  it was a typically warm August day with little coastal fog to be seen to the southwest toward Cone Peak and up north toward Big Sur and Marble Peak.
